EXCLUSIV!

Hello, Goran! First of all let us tell you what an honor is this interview for us. So, again in Romania. How are you feeling after almost an entire life dedicated to music and what surprises should the Romanian audience expect from such an unique event? / Buna, Goran! Deci, din nou in Romania.

Thank you! I usually play joyful concerts. I will play, of course, my new record, “Three letters from Sarajevo”. But I will also play some old tunes that I wrote for the movies, a few tunes from my opera Karmen with a happy end. Don’t worry, it will be crazy. If you are not crazy, you are not normal. / Multumesc! 🙂

You have passed through a long history as an artist. Which can you tell by far that have been the never to forget moments?

I have been a famous rockstar during communist times. When war started in Sarajevo, suddenly all dissapeared. All I had was a property in Paris, while my carreer fell down. So I had to restart from zero and reinvent myself. It’s difficult to be a star one day and the next day to start everything from the scratches, but I think this was the most important moment from my life, that I had the opportunity to start over the second time. Even the most glamorous routine it’s a routine, but what is beautiful is its beginning, so I had the luck to begin all over twice in my lifetime. / Am fost un celebru rockstar in timpul perioadei comuniste. Când a inceput razboiul din Sarajevo, brusc totul a disparut.

You have changed together with the musical industry. In a fast moving industry nowadays, what is the secret of remaining a legend?

Probably because I already had a carreer in the past and I did not do mistakes that you do for the first time. I did not think of success or whatever, I was just writing honest music and there is no other way to make it. Just be happy with what you are doing, in anything in your life. Just do what you like and if you are lucky, there will be someone who will want to listen to your music and buy tickets to your concert. This is the right way to survive in this industry.

After all these years, your Balkan music is still actual as style and message. What does inspire you in keeping reinventing it? Ce va inspira in a continua sa o reinventati?

There is a general curiosity about small cultures in the world. I think that big cultures are influenced by the deathmatch from the small countries. Not only in music, but also in literature, in movies, in kitchen, etc. It’s not true that people listen only to what they got from radio or tv. I was never on tv or on the radio, but still I had millions of records sold. So, the world is not that simple, and yet is better than it looks. Nu numai in muzica, dar si in literatura, in filme, in bucatarie etc.

What has been the main lesson that you feel that you have learnt and can share to the current generations of artists?

I think there is a little logic. If you are on rush, you will eat at Macdonalds, but If you really want to eat something good, you will eat your own food. It’s the same with music. If you are just passing some time, you will think about something that is actual. But if you have a real party, of course you will offer your own music. In music you just look at the history of music. There is no big composer in the history of music who didn’t start from their own tradition. From Gershwin to Paul Mccartney. And be sure that the old method is safe. What you have inside is deeper than the language you speak and much more human, and this is music, which is the most honest and most inspiring language. So just go there, in your tradition. Deci, cautati in adancuri, in traditia voastra.

Looking back now on your entire music career, would you go back and change anything if you had the chance? / Privind retrospectiv in decursul intregii dvs cariere, ce ati schimba daca ati avea aceasta oportunitate?

I think I wasted my time while I was a rockstar and probably if it hadn’t been for the war, now I would be just a retired rockstar, having a house somewhere at the seaside. Of course it was a tragic war, but without it I wouldn’t have started again and be what I am today.

Have you ever felt with all the awards and appreciation received that success always comes with a price and with a huge responsibility?

I present my music by playing it, and not by making videos or going on tv. So it’s a very old fashioned and tiring method. But on the moment when you are on stage, you feel good, you are surrounded by good musicians, in front of you is the audience who really wants to hear what you have to play, so life is good. Deci practic o metoda foarte veche si obositoare. Dar in momentul in care esti pe scena, te simti bine, esti inconjurat de muzicieni buni, in fata ta e publicul care vrea cu adevarat sa auda ceea ce vrei sa canti, deci viata e buna 🙂

How do you see your fans changing from the beginning of your carreer until now?

I think that my audience is formed of young grown-up people who enjoy my music and who do not need to be told what to listen to on the radio or on tv.

Thank You! / Va multumim!
